Description
Since the late 1990s, forensic science has relied on DNA for human identification. NIST supports this community by developing genetic tests and standards across several key areas. Their work includes the typing of short tandem repeat (STR) markers via capillary electrophoresis and next-generation sequencing, as well as mitochondrial genome sequencing. Additionally, NIST focuses on the deconvolution of DNA mixtures, rapid PCR methods, and digital PCR. Beyond basic identity, these projects also analyze single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers to assess biogeographical ancestry and predict physical traits, ultimately helping to transition emerging technologies into practical forensic tools.
