Description

The Naval Research Laboratory at Stennis Space Center (NRL-SSC) has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to advance the representation of upper-ocean mixing and acoustic sound channels in Navy operational ocean forecast systems. The successful candidate will develop, adapt, and implement advanced vertical-layer structures in ocean circulation models; design and conduct numerical experiments to evaluate their impacts on ocean forecasts; and validate model results using observational datasets. The research will provide an opportunity to investigate fundamental ocean-dynamics processes while contributing directly to the development of next-generation Navy ocean forecasting capabilities.

Applicants must have a PhD in physical oceanography, ocean/atmospheric science, applied mathematics, or a related field, with a strong background in ocean dynamics and numerical ocean modeling. Expertise in ocean mixing, water-mass formation, ocean acoustics, or vertical-coordinate/layering methods is highly desirable. Proficiency in Fortran, Python, or MATLAB, experience developing or implementing numerical methods within existing ocean circulation models, and familiarity with high-performance computing (HPC) environments are significant advantages.
