Description
Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations are critical to the advancement of current and future flight vehicle designs, especially in the earlier design stages. CFD, if executed with thorough validation and verification efforts, can fill the gap left by physical testing. This research opportunity will pursue high fidelity modeling and simulation approaches to improve CFD in the design process (see e.g. https://doi.org/10.2514/6.2026-1328). Increasingly, modern approaches of reduced order modeling and surrogate modeling based on simulation and test results are included in this problem set (https://doi.org/10.2514/6.2026-1113, https://doi.org/10.2514/6.2026-4608), along with high-fidelity simulation approaches to cover areas of the flight envelope inaccessible with ground testing. Research relies on working with experimentalists to validate simulations and models, addressing the applicability and usefulness of the models and methods underdevelopment.
